Search engines only read a limited amount of bytes in a page. So if your web page is designed using non-standard tags like <table>, your page rank will decrease resulting your page being listed after all of the other non-related content that the searcher looked for.
PageRank is Google’s system for ranking web pages. A page with a higher PageRank is deemed more important and is more likely to be listed above a page with a lower PageRank.

Table tag is introduced in html for designers to display tabular data. For example spread sheets, variables, etc. Over time, web developers took advantage of this technique to design the whole web site with nothing else but tables. Using tables was easy, but decreased of your chances to get a hit on your web page drastically. Tables added a lot of extra code in the page and since search engines limited the data that is being read and every page that they crawl, most of the important data was not indexed. CSS is the only way to increase your rank and get more traffic into your web site.
